So $453 + $100 for windows + $50+ for decent keyboard, mouse & speakers puts me at $603.

I bought a refurbed 500gb xbox one for $265 literally yesterday, and a brand new 1tb system goes for $400. Can’t see spending 227% of what I did, or 150% of the top-end console price for a computer.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice system for the price. However, for someone like me who just wants to play games and doesn’t really care about the best graphics, etc. a console is much simpler than a PC, and cheaper.

The $500 pile of parts you assemble like the nerdiest model kit ever made doesn’t make a game more challenging, and it doesn’t give you more levels or weapons packs or anything that could possibly make it “better at gaming” other than better graphics, but unless you’re willing to shell out for a new 4k monitor to along with your 1990s Gateway-like tower there’s no reason to taut better PC graphics over console graphics. For me, with my 46" 1080p TV and whopping 2-4 hours a week that I play games it doesn’t makes sense to buy, build, and then find a spot in my living room for a computer, keyboard and mouse just so I can say I’ve got better graphics capabilities.

Not sure how a PC is cheaper, I bought a 360 in 2008 for $350, replaced it once with a refurb for $125 due to a bad disc drive(couldn’t be arsed to do the soldering to replace the drive with a $50 unit), now in 2015 I’ve bought a xbox one for $265(would have been $350 new). So over 8 years it has cost me $740($825 if I’d bought new). I doubt I could have built a new PC in 2008, & either kept upgrading it or built a second up-to-date one in 2015 for significantly less.

Pc beats consoles on one main point. Functionality. Consoles try to be more than a gaming system, but fail miserably. Now most people won’t have a use for such hardware, but pcs are better in the long run because of updates. This generation of consoles won’t last as long, as they’re running hardware from 2007ish. They can barely run games at 60fps 1080p which is the standard for pc games today. Consoles are catching up, but slowly. I can’t see this current gen lasting 8 years.

Both of which exist on console along with the free game subs. Plus used games are still a thing and considering how the consoles work you should only buy used.

Being outpaced by graphics happens on PC and don’t I know it. I really need a new graphics card since I made the bad decision to go cheaper and get an AMD card which has been the bane of my PC experience for the last 3 years.

AMD processor and Nvidia video card?

Has the market changed that much since I’ve been out of the building business?

Intel chip and AMD/ATI v-card used to be the only way to fly. Otherwise, the AMD chip starts cooking and throttling, never reaching anything close to advertised speeds; and the Nvidia card doesn’t ever play well until the 6th or 7th iteration of drivers.

Look you bought a new video card, too bad it’s already out of date. Only way to keep up is to buy a 2nd one and by the time you install it you are out of date again. To be honest, by the time they release games they are already creating another one that is even more resource critical. Even if you spend the money and get ahead of the game, you wont be for long. I figure at least with an xbox one, everyone else is running the same hardware, only thing I can blame my deaths on is my connection and well lack of skill which I am ok with. I was updating my computer all the time just to run games, and then you have monitors and sound cards, speakers, keyboards, mice. The list does actually go on and on.

Your new computer will be ‘maxed out’ before PS4/XB1 are. Nobody has to make a game run on your computer, but devs will optimize their code for consoles if they want to sell games.
